About
Humanster (an aggregation of the words ‘Human’, ‘Monster’ and ‘Anarchy’) is the title of an art project by Super A. Together with the photographer MJay – who documents the complete process – and with the assistance of a local ‘guide’, they visited five metropolises: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Paris and Milan. Every one of these cities received its own underground mural.
For each city, Super A designed a ‘city monster’ in the semi-realist ‘cartoon style’, which characterizes his art. Each city monster is constructed from people, objects, icons, and historical facts and occurrences, typical for each city (the so-called ‘Monster-DNA’). The themes of the murals give expression to the frayed edge of urban life, and above all show the dark wants of mankind.
The localities to which these murals have been applied can be seen as the ‘underbelly of the city’, thereby enhancing the actual content of the art project. Super A deals in ‘city marketing the underbelly sensation’ and visualizes the self-side of society. His art can be seen as the melancholic, cynical little brother of the picture postcard.
Super A and MJay intend to visit twenty five cities over the next two years. Photographs of the murals will then be put on display in a large retrospective exhibition.
